Etymology The origin of the process of performing as a process server goes back almost to the beginning of time. It has been recorded as far back as the 12th century B.C. The origin began and usually meant for that of royalty (the court) would have to send legal communications in the form of official edicts, dictums, declarations, and other such legal matters. The royal means gave way to judicial means as the ruling means of deciding guilt or innocence. These persons sent by the king to either their own kingdoms town crier or to post or to another kingdom were responsible for hand delivering legal notices. To this day this process is continued to be used throughout the modern world...they are called a process server. The basic reason for these services to be performed by a runner or a messenger led to the origin of the Olympics. Though the Olympics were based on a religious tribute to Zeus around the turn of the 10th century B.C. The first Olympic event was running. Kingdoms; in a religious display to pay tribute and honor to Zeus, would pit there respective kingdom's best runner's against each other (marathon) for prizes in a display of unity and peace. These long distance runners or messengers were the first olympians. In more recent times there were also times the military and Indians would use this same concept to send messages. Though modern times a process server may continue the original concepts, we often times do not run nor compete for prizes and probably not for religious reasons. The bible mentions posting. Posting of legal notice of forgiveness of debts to the city gates. The term posting and service of process carried all the way into the 19th century, where even today you can still see television depiction of Sheriff's either serving or posting legal notices. Watch an old western movie sometime where the sheriff post's (nail's a legal document to either the front door of a home or on the entry post of a fence line to someone's property). So in the spirit of education, below are some terms still used today and where they originated and what they originally meant. Some of these words can only be traced back to old English language (and have changed over time) around the turn of the 16th century A.D. But it is good to know regardless. |
